I’m Uploading My Story to Wattpad

31 Day of Rougarou Cover

Wattpad is a social network where readers and writers can interact. Writers can post stories, chapters, working versions, entire novels or excerpts and share them with readers for free. As of December 2013 Wattpad has over 18 million users who can access stories posted via their phones and mobile devices. Of the many genres on Wattpad the most popular are Young Adult, Romance, Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I signed up awhile ago but never took the time to explore and interact on the platform until recently. I’ve been working on a new adult dark horror novel and have decided to post chapters of the work in progress every Friday. If you enjoy being taken into a mag

Why am I posting my story for free on Wattpad?

It’s a way for me to test out all of my crazy ideas. It will allow me to receive feedback from the people who matter, my readers. I have to admit I’m scared out of my mind placing my writing out there for everyone to read. It’s way more terrifying to me than making up these scary stories. But I have to find a way to get past the fear and just do it. Violeta, the main character is demanding to be let out of the box.

You can find me on Wattpad here:  If you have a minute I would truly appreciate your support with a read or follow.  Thanks.

Here’s a description of the story:

The blood tingling adventure of reluctant supersensitive, Violeta, who has managed to keep her supernatural magical abilities secret until she gets bitten by a legendary power hungry Creole shape shifter, a Rougarou. She has 31 days to learn how to use her psychic abilities to break the curse or lose all her powers.

Are you using Wattpad?

Do you have any tips for me?

“Today is the day to move past your past, move closer to your dreams, rise above your detractors, feel the fear and do it anyway, stoop below your ego, get out of your own way, and allow your life to amaze you.” Elissa Gabrielle

“We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.” Marilyn Monroe

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” Frank Herber

You are loved.

The Most Inspiring Dr. Martin Luther King Quotes

“Believe in yourself. Believe you are somebody. Nobody else can do this for us. We must move into our inner soul and sign our own emancipation proclamation. Be proud of your heritage. We don’t have anything to be ashamed of. Somebody told a lie one day and made everything Black ugly and evil … something degrading or sinister. Let’s get the language right so everyone here may cry out: ‘Yes I’m black and I’m proud and beautiful.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

Believe in yourself!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest orators and speech writers.  I’m happy his birthday is honored every year giving people the opportunity to revisit his words.  You can read more of my thoughts on MLK here:  Lessons for Latinos from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

How to Be Crazy

how to be crazy
It’s the beginning of a new year and most people are making lists to improve themselves so they’ll look better to others.  Take a good look at your list.  Is your list personalized to your needs?  Is it a little bit crazy?  It should be.

Being yourself and following your instincts take courage but why waste your time worrying about what others think when you can be happy right now?  Very few people actually know who we truly are.  At best a person at any given time only knows a slither, a very small slice of who you are and what you’re capable of.  Other people’s opinions reveal everything about them and absolutely nothing about you.  Make it your year.  Be crazy.

How to Be Crazy

Believe in yourself.

You have many skills and amazing qualities.  Best of all you have the never ending capacity to learn.  Practice self love and that will build your self confidence.  No one can resist a powerful attitude.  I learned to believe in myself when I heard peoples criticism and I knew how wrong they were.

Follow your intuition.

Intuition is tapping into your unconscious or subconscious mind.  They are a resource of information.  Pay attention to your body’s signals.  Your body provides powerful information about your health, decisions and other people.

Believe in your dreams.

Indulge in daydreaming, imagination and play.  Dreams are like magic.  When you respect and nurture them they will bring you meaning and purpose.

Be courageous.

It’s not easy being courageous but one thing that has helped me is knowing people will criticize no matter what so I might as well be happy.  My happiness is more important than a fleeting opinion.

Follow through.

Don’t procrastinate.  The quicker you act the less time you have to worry or become fearful.

What crazy things are you planning on doing this year?

Here’s my short list:  Create every day.  Write and write better.  Travel and have many fun adventures.

I hope you go crazy this year.  If you need extra inspiration here’s a song to get you started.

“One person’s craziness is another person’s reality.”  Tim Burton

“Be crazy! Be brave enough to live different.”  Paulo Coelho

“What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy?”  Ursula K. Le Guin

“Live life fully while you’re here. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You’re going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.” Anthony Robbins

“I’m not strange, weird, off, nor crazy, my reality is just different from yours.” Lewis Carroll

“Dreams are often most profound when they seem the most crazy.” Sigmund Freud

Creating New Goals & Objectives

Your life is the manifestation of your dreams. It is an art."

As the end of the year approaches I like to take a look back and see which of my previous goals were accomplished.  It helps me to understand what I focused my time on and where I placed my energy.  I had a really long list of goals for 2013.  Many of which I didn’t get around to.  However the ones I did accomplish were things I was very passionate about like launching Bella Vida by Letty .com.    Hard work has paid off and the site has grown steadily since the May launch.  It is going through another growth spurt right now with an incredible increase in subscribers.  Thank you to all my readers, followers and subscribers for being there every step of the way.  I truly appreciate your support.

Before moving on to some tips I want to share a really wonderful inspiring quote I found while reading The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz.

“Your life is the manifestation of your dreams.  It is an art.”

I find this sentiment absolutely beautiful.  This year when I begin my list of goals I will include my hopes, dreams, desires and wishes.  While I’m here I might as well manifest them.  Why not create the world I want to see and the experiences I want to live.

After compiling my list I must strive for clarity.  Creating clear goals makes them easier to achieve.

Some questions to ask when brainstorming:

  • Is your goal clear?
  • Are your goals realistic?
  • Can they be achieved?
  • What is your main goal?

Setting smaller goals have given me more confidence in my capabilities.  This allows me to take greater risks and accept bigger challenges.  Since I have so many goals I’ve categorized them into family, personal, business and creative.  Then I will select the ones I am truly passionate about and devise a plan.   From the list I will chose only a few and brainstorm the steps I will need to take to reach my goals.

Have you defined clear goals or are you fine tuning them?

I would love to hear your tips and tricks for achieving your goals. Please share them with me in the comments below.

“You can have many great ideas in your head, but what makes the difference is the action. Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward.” Miguel Ruiz

“Many people flounder about in life because they do not have a purpose, an objective toward which to work.” George Halas

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” Henry David Thoreau

“The big secret in life is there is no secret. Whatever your goal. You can get there if you’re willing to work.” Oprah Winfrey

Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

Recently, I went for an early morning walk run.  I didn’t get very far down the path before spotting a huge dragonfly on the ground.  I wasn’t sure it was dead but it was lying perfectly still.  Thinking about having it fly onto me gave me the creeps and its large dark fly like eyes made me feel disgusted but as I got nearer I noticed the stunningly beautiful colors on its body.  Vibrant shades of green and blue coming alive before my eyes in feigned movement under the glare of the morning sun similar to the optical illusions of cracker jack prizes.  This creature does have extraordinary beauty which gave me the courage to get close up for a photo.

We each have the power to change our perspective if we take the time to do so.  There are days when everything seems so hard.  There are times when we just cannot find the right solutions.  Sometimes it takes slowing down and looking at things in another light to spark the right answers or at least get us going in the right direction.

debris on the beach in Florida

When I am behind the camera lens I am slowing down to really look at something.  For example, I was on the beach one afternoon and I noticed debris all along the shore.  From far away it looked like garbage but when I got near enough to really see the details something magical happened.  It became mysterious to think of where these bits and pieces came from ending up together at my feet on the shore. At what precise moment did they become beautiful?  Maybe when I began to define each and everyone individually.  Searching with hungry eyes for beauty.

I lost something and I’m searching for solutions with this creative exercise.

Do you have methods to help you with problem solving?

“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”  Paulo Coelho

“Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary.”  Gerard Way

“Struggling and suffering are the essence of a life worth living. If you’re not pushing yourself beyond the comfort zone, if you’re not demanding more from yourself – expanding and learning as you go – you’re choosing a numb existence. You’re denying yourself an extraordinary trip.”  Dean Karnazes (Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner)

What Will You Do With Your Outrage?

“Fear is often disguised as moral outrage.” Judy Blume
Miami Wynwood Walls Graffiti murals
Miami Wynwood July 2012

Sadly tragedies happen everyday and people are offended and outraged.  I see their anger and hear their rants but how about creating something positive with that energy.  Instead of uselessly cursing and hurling anger out into the world why not focus on a solution.  Why not harness that energy in a positive way?  Focus on creating change for the better.
Ask yourself:
How can such and such tragedy be prevented?  Who is hurting?  How can I help?

The next time you feel outraged ask yourself who can benefit from your energy?  Who can you help directly right now?

This world is yours what will you do to make it better?

“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.” Benjamin Franklin
“Let us be the ones who say we do not accept that a child dies every three seconds simply because he does not have the drugs you and I have. Let us be the ones to say we are not satisfied that your place of birth determines your right for life. Let us be outraged, let us be loud, let us be bold.” Brad Pitt
“They hate because they fear, and they fear because they feel that the deepest feelings of their lives are being assaulted and outraged. And they do not know why; they are powerless pawns in a blind play of social forces.” Richard Wright (Native Son)
“To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?”
William Shakespeare (Hamlet)

Live Your Passion

I grew up fearing I would make the wrong choices.  Then two years ago I made a decision to do only things I am passionate about.  I will no longer allow fear to steal any more of my precious time.  For me that means doing what I love every day.  Every day I write, I take and edit photos often and as I type this I have the greatest urge to play with yellow paint.  And I will paint very soon.  By giving myself permission to practice my passions I have discovered my Bella Vida.  My mission is to share each and every positive discovery that has enriched my life with you.  Subscribe here.

Taking the first step is a big deal.  It is opening yourself up to the universe.  It will change your life for the better.  Once you determine what your passions are you can create a plan with a mission and goals to accomplish.  Here are a few questions to help you discover what your passions are.

how to find your passion

How to Find Your Passion

– What do you spend hours doing?

– What can’t you help but do?

-What is it you sacrifice time and money to do?

Writing this post has reiterated to myself that I am on the right track.  I hope you feel that way too.  Your contributions matter.  When you follow your passions everything you create will be authentic and that is your gift to the world.  Every day is an opportunity to learn and discover.  Begin by owning your uniqueness.

Have you found your passion?

Have you said it out loud?

Are you living your passion?

“Only a burning patience will lead to the attainment of a splendid happiness.” Pablo Neruda

“To create art with all the passion in one’s soul is to live art with all the beauty in one’s heart.” Aberjhani

“Stop living within the confines of how others define you! You weren’t created to live their life; you were created to live yours – so LIVE it! ” Steve Maraboli

You Never Know What Someone Else is Going Through

I always put my best face on just like everyone else does.  I work hard at my craft and present to the best of my ability on this site.  I guess that’s why it might be easy to make assumptions about other people.  However we can never truly know others.  You never know what someone else is going through.  Some people don’t even take the time to know themselves.  I’ve been thinking about this for some weeks now after reading about the suicide of two different bloggers.  Even though they put themselves out there, no one imagined either of these two people would go so far as to kill themselves.

Everyone has stress.  I know I sure do.  For some it might be health, relationships, financial problems or work related issues.  There is no way to know.  Even when the person reaches out we can never really know the extent it is effecting them.  Just this past week a good friend has been cyber bullied, another is going through some health issues while another’s mother is seriously ill.

I practice and teach compassion.  No I am far from perfect but I can try.  I can stop myself from judging others, being critical or cruel.  I can chose to smile and say something nice and I can chose to speak up against wrongs.  Perfection is a unicorn.  Fun to chase.  It’s all about the chase.  Every bump in the road, every person you meet or the situations you avoid are details that make up your unique life.

If you care to do me a favor please subscribe to the newsletter.  When I launched in May everyone was unsubscribed.  I tried to make it very easy.  You can subscribe either below or in the sidebar.  You can also click here if you prefer.

I thoughtfully chose the name Bella Vida because I wanted a constant reminder to slow down and take in the details that make this life and everything in it beautiful.  I personally need that for myself, Letty.  I feel it is my mission in life to share that feeling which is why I put it out there everyday on this site.  I’m grateful if I can make someone smile with a word, photo or artwork.  Thank you for reading.  Thank you for your comments and kind words.

Knowing Yourself Is the Beginning of All Wisdom

Knowing Yourself Is the Beginning of All Wisdom
To become the most complete human being you can be requires taking the time to know yourself.  Spend time alone.
Ask yourself big questions: your hopes, beliefs, dreams and desires.

Do you take the time to know yourself?

I get to know myself through my writing.  I’m naturally curious and always asking questions.

“Don’t exist.
Get out, explore.
Challenge authority. Challenge yourself.
Change forever.
Become who you say you always will.
Keep moving. Don’t stop. Start the revolution.

Frases y Dichos en Español

I grew up listening to frases y dichos (quotes) from my Puerto Rican family.  Colorful ways of passing on advice.  I enjoy reading and pinning inspirational quotes but don’t always come across ones written in Spanish so I thought I would share a few with you today.  I’m thinking of making this a weekly or monthly series.

Photos of Wynwood Graffiti Murals

Imagine a place where art is all around you. Yes art.  Art is expression.

Wherever you look, someone left traces of their creativity.

Leaving no place overlooked, it’s on the walls, on the street, windows, light poles even trash cans.

Where the wind carries the acrid chemical smell of spray paint but you don’t really mind it.  It’s a welcome relief from the humidity.

Where you have to be careful where you walk, lean and sit or come away with wet paint.

Where the streets are slanted, side walks broken, but you can still appreciate the beauty of decay on crumbling industrial buildings lovingly wrapped in barbed wire.

Where mystery and the mysterious are not uncommon.

The Miami neighborhood of Wynwood is an ever changing canvas where you are sure to be uncertain what you will see or experience next.

Sometimes people are the art.  You will find them costumed or painted into the most interesting characters you never thought of.

Performance art is everywhere; a group of kids dancing on the corner, a DJ spinning creating an impromptu party on the sidewalk or  an acoustic duo playing outside a fancy new gallery.

You can get food from a truck or the ghostbusters station wagon inside a bar sometimes flea market.

This place inspires me.  I come away feeling the passion expressed in artists works.  It reminds me of the passion I have for expressing myself.

Gentrification has me worried about how much longer this place will exist.  Wherever these artists flee I will follow.

How to Use the Power of Imagination to Create Your Ideal Life

Today I want to remind you that you have one of the most powerful tools at your disposal and it’s absolutely free.  It is your imagination, the action of producing ideas.  Imagination can also be referred to as inner vision because it’s the ability to form new images which are not perceived through our senses such as sight and hearing.  It is an awareness not confined to our senses or the rules and laws of our reality.  This is precisely what makes it such an effective and powerful tool.

Without the boundaries of the real world we are free to create and reinvent the world.  From these creations we may not only inspire ourselves but others as well.

By using our imagination we can see beyond our current condition and find new insight into how the present changes our future.  Viewing things from new perspectives can allow us to tap unrealized potential.  We may imagine ways to make our dreams come true.

Solve Problems

By comparing our imaginations to reality we may prevent bad outcomes.  Seeing things from different perspectives allows us to generate alternatives.  It allows us to tap into the knowledge of possibility.  By enabling you to imagine all sorts of scenarios, it alerts you to dangers as well as opportunities.

Deal with Emotions

We can deal with emotions by generating alternate scenarios with different outcomes.  For example, if you fear something you can imagine a way that you are able to conquer that fear.

Imagination allows us to remove any earthly boundaries granting us the ability to take fresh new perspectives.  This helps us uncover things we might not have been able to see before or discover things we never knew of.  One way is by empathizing with others and seeing the future through their eyes.

Feeling Free

In your imagination, you can travel anywhere in the speed of light, without any obstacles.  There are no limits or boundaries.  In addition you are absolute free to express yourself.

You are already imagining scenarios when you worry, feel anxious or stressed.  By using your imagination you can access your potential and begin creating the life of your dreams. There are no limits to positive energy.  Here is exactly how to use your imagination to zone in and focus on making your dreams come true in ten easy steps.

Emotional Safety and Places of Refuge

Cracker HouseThis cozy child size playhouse I came across at the Naples Botanical Garden reminds me of the safe place I carry in my mind and my heart.  Sacred places no one is allowed to trample.  We should all have them.  They are necessary to our emotional well being.

Every person wants to be loved, acknowledged and respected.  Sometimes we must find or create our own safe spaces to take refuge and recharge.  These spaces may be either external or internal but they are both necessary.  A judgment free zone where you are free and safe to be you.  There are community spaces which offer safety against violence, safe spaces for survivors, safety from prejudice and judgment. Seek them.
