Are You a Trend Setter or Trend Follower? Fashion Night Out Miami 2012

Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) is a global initiative created in 2009 to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry’s economy during the recession. By going out and making a purchase you are supporting your local community and boosting the country’s economy.  In addition many events were affiliated with charities.  Wherever you chose to spend your hard earned money it would be a night of giving back.

And you know my philosophy:  When you give, it leaves you wide open to receive.

I headed down to the Miami Design district for some fun, food and to take photos of course.  I chose this event in particular because it supports local artists, vendors, musicians, venues and designers.   Plus I wanted to see what the local scene was creating and bolster it.

It was a nice break in the routine.  There was a DJ spinning house music, food trucks at the curb and lots of eye candy.  There were several custom jewelry vendors.  One in particular captured my attention; these delicate bracelets with precious stones in the loveliest shades.  I ended up with an evil eye bracelet in the prettiest shade of sea blue.

The trend I noticed were designers re-use and re-purposing of objects also known as upcylcing.  Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.  There was a jewelry designer who incorporated keys and doorknobs into her work while a boutique owner incorporated vintage pieces of clothing and accessories alongside new ones.  The clothing and handbag designers made fantastic creations combing textiles and fabrics.  There was something for everyone.

So are you a trend setter or a trend follower?

I have to say I’m a bit of both.  I take what I like and wear it in my own way 😉
