World’s Tallest Free Standing Cross in St. Augustine Florida

chapel

The world’s tallest free standing cross can be found in St. Augustine, Florida on the historic grounds of Mission Nombre de Dios and the first Christian church in the US.  I read about it while researching my trip to St. Augustine in the roadside oddities list and was curious to see it in person.  Giant crosses are not something you see every day. You don’t have to be religious to visit the grounds.  I’m not.  It’s a peaceful place laid out like a park with lots of shade and a winding path where every so often you will find manmade […]

Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park

Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins

If you’re on the road exploring central Florida, Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park is a great place to stop stretch and picnic.  The historical site is located in Homosassa Citrus County.  I was surprised to find the site is so small you can explore it in under 15 minutes.  It was interesting to see something from so long ago survive the harsh Florida climate.  The best part for me is just across the street.  There is a very lovely place to picnic.  You will find covered picnic tables and lots of shade provided by tall moss covered trees. […]

What to Pack in Your Carry On Bag

inside my carry on bag

Most airlines allow for two carry on bags.  One which can be stored under your seat and a larger one to be stored in the overhead compartment.  Check your airline for their particular size and weight requirements ahead of time. Make sure your bag is comfortable.  I like using a backpack because it distributes the weight evenly and is much more comfortable to carry.  I choose one with lots of pockets to keep certain things separate.  I don’t want my sunglasses getting scratched. High Sierra A.T. Gear Ultimate Access 21″ Carry-On Wheeled Backpack , Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack, Travelpro Luggage Crew 9 […]

Celebrate the 4th of July with Empowering Independence Quotes

4th of July

The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a federal holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence is one of the United States of America’s most cherished symbol of liberty.   Today I feel grateful for what I have and will continue to work on being a compassionate human being to impact this life in a positive way.  I have compiled a long list of quotes by many famous names you will find familiar contemplating what is means to be independant.  I hope you find […]

How to Pair Food and Wine Tips From David Mirassou

food and wine pairings

I enjoy drinking wine and sampling of its many varieties but have never taken a formal class to understand the intricacies of wine.  From what I had previously seen it seemed quite serious and even intimidating.  Lucky for me I received an invite to a great event.  I recently had the pleasure of attending a Bloggy Boot Camp hosted by the SITS Girls in Miami where not only did we learn advanced marketing tips but we were treated to a Mirassou Wine tasting party. I met David Mirassou before his presentation and he was very down to earth and welcoming.  […]

Fire Dancers Celebrating the Summer Solstice

fire dancer

The solstice marks the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.  Today we celebrate the longest day of the year and get ready for some warmer days to come.  I am reminded of a photo shoot I did during a summer solstice.  Several years ago I headed to a drum circle to celebrate the summer solstice when I ran into a group of performers.  They were fire dancers.  I remember them being very polite and humble about their skills.  They answered my questions and I watched them borrow each others equipment to practice before their performance.  The show was […]
